Toronto Women’s 5K Race Report

Yesterday I ran the Toronto Women’s Run Series 5K held at Sunnybrook Park in Toronto.  Race time was at 8:15 so I headed out at 6:30 to make sure I would not be late.  Google maps told me I could expect about a 50 minute commute and I wanted to get there early to make sure I could get parking as well.  Good think I left early as I did get caught in some construction that held me up.  I got to the park at around 7:30, parked and jogged down to the washrooms.  Next I went to meet up with a couple of running friends.

The 10K was the first group out, they started at 8am.  Shortly after volunteers started coming out with signs to assign corrals.  They had 18:00-24:00, 24:01-30:00, 30:01-35:00 and 35:01 +.  I lined up in the second corral (24:01-30:00).  My personal best (PB) from the  Moon In June race was 28:15 and my goal for this race was 27:00.

Being at the front for this race I didn’t experience too much crowding.  What I did experience was an urge to keep up with the quicker runners and found myself going too fast.  My first km split was 4:33 – my fastest km ever.  I tried to slow down as I didn’t want to burn out and by the second km I was still going a bit too fast (4:57).  Onwards to the turn around and up to the 3K marker I was holding a good pace 5:22 but somewhere between the third and fourth km my legs won the battle against my head and I slowed down to walk a bit and drink some water.  Back at it I saw the 1km remaining sign and I slowly started to pick it up repeating to myself “almost there, 5 more minutes”. I gathered the energy to pick it up and finish strong. I saw 26:20 as I crossed the finish and knew that I had squashed my last PB.  I got my medal, an energy drink and went to pick up my food baggie.  Back over to check the official times and I was pleased with my result.  26:16. Wow!

This was a great race.  There was a great swag bag with a really nice Mizuno technical t shirt in pink  (which I sadly did not take a picture of) as well as a personalized race bib and Cliff protein bar sample.  The after race food was great (full bags with lots of goodies).  The race itself was well organized and it is for a great cause.  I will definitely do this race again next year.
