Sporting Life 10K

On Mother’s day, May 8th, I ran Sporting Life for the 3rd year in a row.  This is a race I have done each year (except the first) since I started running again.  The first year I did Sporting Life I got my 10K PB.   The second year I ran it, was one of my worst 10K races.  It was after my marathon and right around when I fell off of running. I also stopped posting to my blog and so there is no post to link up.  This year, considering all things, I am pleased with how this race went.

Bib #10636

Chip time – 1:00:23.8

Pace – 6:02

Gender place – 4268/10895

Category place – 512/1330

Overall place – 9265/18689

Right off the bat I maintained a better pace for twice the distance as the Mercedes Oakville 5K so I am pleased with that.  Running with my philosophy of not caring too much takes a lot of pressure off myself trying to achieve time goals of my fitter, faster runner self. I  know I will get there again and that is allowing me to enjoy the running again.

I set my watch for 10’s and 1’s but ended up running through it up until the 6K point.  I decided with the 10’s and 1’s that I would also consider how I was feeling.  So I was feeling pretty good, not pushing too hard but keeping a pace I thought I could maintain.  This race is all downhill so that also helped.

Around 6K I took my first walk break to have some water.  From 6-10K I let myself walk probably 3-4 times.  Not for the full minute though. I guess I just threw the 10’s and 1’s out the window. I felt in the end I finished strong on this race and if I was just a smidge faster or I didn’t walk that last walk break then I for sure would have come in under 60 minutes.  But that doesn’t matter. What matters is that I am back out there and enjoying it again and like every year my husband and kids were there to cheer me on and meet me at the finish line.  It is nice to see how happy and proud they are of me when I finish.  Next up will be the Canada Day 5K and my kids will be running the 1K kids race.  They are so excited to get their own medals.
